Wild Outside: Around the World with Survivorman

Written by Les Stroud. Illustrated by Andrew P. Barr.
Published in 2021 by Annick Press.

Les Stroud has shared his love of both the outdoors and filmmaking with us on the screen on the Survivorman series. Now, in this compelling book for youth, he shares not only those adventures, but also the necessary survival skills.

Readers are taken on 12 journeys across the globe, including five in Canada. Stroud’s sense of excitement and wonder shine through as he describes everything from being chased through a swamp (and up a tree) by a bull moose to hair-raising encounters with cobras and cockroaches. In addition to the fast-paced stories, there are nature facts and practical advice for spending time outside. Each story begins with Les Stroud’s humility about something he did wrong, setting the stage for learning to navigate nature with respect.

  2. Summitview School - Grade 5/6M

As a class, the majority rates this book Wild Outside 5/5 stars. This book had many adventures all around the world and even has some class connections to our curriculum. It shows that mistakes are okay, he uses the resources that he has on hand, and shares survival tips. Les Stroud explains that wherever you are around the world, you can still be adventurous. By including pictures of his adventures, it really brought this story to life. This book has taught us about what to do in similar situations, we live in a remote mountain hamlet.

  3. Wildwood School

This book has spectular graphics paired with funny and informative stories filled with energy and jokes. With twelve stories dotted with great grammer, small experiments and it contains handy information. This book is an absolute joy to read! While showcasing adaptation, how to get out of a perelious animal encounter and how to signal for help this book still cracks hilarious jokes. I would definitely recomend this splendid book for anyone who loves tense non-fictions stories.
