Sit

Written by Deborah Ellis.
Published in 2017 by Groundwood Books.

The seated child. With a single powerful image, Deborah Ellis draws our attention to nine children and the situations they find themselves in, often through no fault of their own. In each story, a child makes a decision and takes action, be that a tiny gesture or a life-altering choice.

Jafar is a child laborer in a chair factory and longs to go to school. Sue sits on a swing as she and her brother wait to have a supervised visit with their father at the children’s aid society. Gretchen considers the lives of concentration camp victims during a school tour of Auschwitz. Mike survives seventy-two days of solitary as a young offender. Barry squirms on a food court chair as his parents tell him that they are separating. Macie sits on a too-small time-out chair while her mother receives visitors for tea. Noosala crouches in a fetid, crowded apartment in Uzbekistan, waiting for an unscrupulous refugee smuggler to decide her fate.

These children find the courage to face their situations in ways large and small, in this eloquent collection from a master storyteller.

I liked this collection of short stories. They are not too long and are all different. It usually not too hard to follow the plot. The stories are good, but they are not happy or humorous. I like that each story has to do in some way with a chair, sometimes it’s hard to spot though. If you are going to read this book, I would recommend not reading too many stories at a time because, since they are sorta sad, it could affect your opinion on them. I still recommend reading “Sit.”

I’ve never read a book full of little short stories before. I think it’s cool.
    It’s an easy read.

It was a good book, I wish it had a few more pictures. I was happy that it was long and it had lots of different stories. There was lots of details of the stories. Some of the stories were fun, but not for all of them. The second story with the time out chair was really funny because she was sitting in a too small chair that was pink with a triceratops!

Sit is an excellent book to pass the time with and a must read in my opinion. This book helped me understand how to stand up to my fears and also helped me understand the issue of children who are unable to stand up to their fears and have no help. I liked this book because of the authenticity and fantasy of the stories. I recommend this book to children who are old enough to know and understand how poverty and fear is an issue.

This book is about different kids with different opinions about different chairs. It is a fun book to read and I never wanted to give the book back to the public library, but I did so others could read it. I recommend this book for every one of all ages.
