Letters to a Prisoner

Written by Jacques Goldstyn.
Published in 2017 by Owl Kids.

Letters to a Prisoner is a creative masterwork by Canadian author and illustrator Jacques Goldstyn. This gorgeous wordless picture book was inspired by Amnesty International’s “Write for Rights” campaign which supports individuals around the globe in writing and sending letters to those who have been wrongfully imprisoned. From the first page to the last, Letters to a Prisoner is a refreshing surprise as it seamlessly connects traditional picture book conventions with more modern, politically charged themes of social justice and freedom of speech.

I really like this book and how you get feelings without actually reading words. Like the feeling of sadness and happiness during the beginning and end of the book.

Even though i had to read it three times to know what happened, its a cool story. Pictures may be a little low wuality, and the book may be short, but like escape from syria, this book makes you think that it isnt like Canada all around the world. Some countries are unfair and discrimatory, but it makes us think of you fortunate we are. Four and a half stars for sure.

What I thought of this book was how they were protesting and how all the people were sending letters to a man who was in jail.

    Book review-

The book “Letters to a Prisoner” is explained without words but delivers a powerful message. Jacques Goldstyn’s illustrations show how an innocent man gets sent to jail for believing in his principles. When he is hopeless in jail, the man receives a letter of support. That one letter held enough power to make him happier and he gains hope. As days pass, he starts getting more and more letters which make him imagine being home.

From my perspective, it’s an enjoyable book because of the structure which is no text and all illustrations. Even the illustrations are funny. For example, the noses of all the characters are pretty big. I think the “funny noses” in the illustrations hooked me to read the book.

I think the book has two good morals which are to always believe in your principles and to never lose hope. The morals are good because they will help you to become a good human being and overcome any challenges that you face.

However, the book has also a serious side and it is not for sensitive people. For example, I did not like the violence and bloodshed in the beginning of the book.

If you like violent and serious fiction stories, then this is the book for you. I think kids are the main people who should read this because it will help them develop a strong character. But, I still recommend this book for adults as they can explain the moral of the book to their children without the violent details.

This book was very visually powerful. Never has a book with no words said so much. I found it to be so very touching.

I liked the book because you kind of have to stop and think about what the pictures mean, and the book, is cool how they all work together in it.

It’s good book. But I think it should have a few words, because I really like to read words.

It is very unique book that it uses no words. Most authors don’t use just pictures. So this is cool because some books have no pictures, but this book has no words!

Letters to a Prisoner is about a man who gets captured. It was tragic at times but it told a story of freedom and hope, showing that people really care and no matter what your fighting for you’ll always have someone who’s on your side. Letters To a Prisoner is a really good book. It was really powerful for a book with no words. In the beginning, they were fighting for rights and privileges and I think that you should stand up for others and do what you think is right (unless your intentions are bad. I would recommend this for grades 3-6 because it is a bit sad for younger kids.

A man is sent to prison for standing up for his beliefs. Day by day, he begins to lose hope. One day, he receives a letter of hope, and more letters start to come. The man is released from his cell after many letters that come.

I would recommend ‘Letters to a Prisoner’ because of the author’s illustrations that tell a story. I believe that the book’s message is to never lose hope.
