Growing Up Trans: In Our Own Words

Written by Lindsay Herriot & Kate Fry, Eds..
Published in 2021 by Orca.

Growing Up Trans: In Our Own Words is a nonfiction anthology of poems, stories, art, and essays written by transgender youth. These stories were collected and curated through a series of facilitated workshops, hosted by Dr. Lindsay Herriot and Kate Fry, where young transgender people were provided with mentors to help them transform their ideas into the beautifully constructed pieces that make up this collection. Herriot and Fry write: “Recognizing how cisgender adults tend to do most of the talking about trans youth, we wondered how we might help trans youth speak for themselves instead. The goal was not to ‘give’ trans youth a voice—they already have one—but rather to use our cis, adult privilege to make those voices louder.” (p. 1) The editors have also included numerous resources, such as reading lists, sources for further research, lists of helpful organizations for trans youth and families, and a glossary of terms written by author Tash McAdam.

I think this book is written very well becuase it really repersents what trans people somtimes feel like. Also some people that aren’t trans can realate to some things written in the book. One line was,”you don’t have to conceal yourself for anyone”. i think that means that you don’t have to change or hide your true self, no matter what anyone says to or about you. Overall I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I love this book so much!!

This book is amazing. All of these stories are touching. It goes to show the truth about growing up trans. My best friend is Gender fluid and they (today) is a very good person. my other best friends religion prevents him from being trans or part of the LGBTQIA2+ community. He still supports my best friend through their journey. This book deserves lots of compliments.

it was a good book with sad parts in it.Its about people who are trans and don’t feel like they belong.Theres a story in there where she plays video games and thereare only girls and boys and she dosnt fell like she fits in either of the catogorys and she feels unperfect and starts second guessing her self.I loved the book
