Burying the Moon

Written by Andrée Poulin. Illustrated by Sonali Zohra.
Published in 2021 by Groundwood.

Latika may be young, and she may be ‘only’ a girl, but she is strong and independent, overcoming her fears and fighting for her beliefs in this intense and moving novel by Andrée Poulin. While the boys have freedom to run and play and go to school, Latika’s days are defined by long walks to the river each morning to fetch water for the family and evenings spent weaving baskets with her sister. So far, Latika can still attend school, and this is where she is happiest, but she knows that this privilege will soon end as she approaches her twelfth birthday.

Burying the Moon is one of my favorite books, and the plot is amazing! I personally love books that talk about women rights. Lakita has lots of personality, and I would love to be her friend in real life.

I really enjoyed this book and I think it would be so hard not to be able to use the bathroom during the day. I am so glad that they built a functional toilet in the end.

Burying the moon was a VERY good book! It really raised awareness about the injustice of women not having washrooms in other countries. It wasvery interesting and always had me on the eagle of my seat just wanting to read more and more. I think it would be a amazing read for a class or book club to read together and discuss about. It has been one of my favourites so far so I would definitely recommend it to other people!

This book made me think about people who won’t listen to others who have problems. It’s crazy that these kinds of issues still exist in the world today!
