Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster

Written by Jonathan Auxier.
Published in 2018 by Penguin Random House.

For nearly a century, Victorian London relied on “climbing boys”–orphans owned by chimney sweeps–to clean flues and protect homes from fire. The work was hard, thankless and brutally dangerous. Eleven-year-old Nan Sparrow is quite possibly the best climber who ever lived–and a girl. With her wits and will, she’s managed to beat the deadly odds time and time again.

But when Nan gets stuck in a deadly chimney fire, she fears her time has come. Instead, she wakes to find herself in an abandoned attic. And she is not alone. Huddled in the corner is a mysterious creature–a golem–made from ash and coal. This is the creature that saved her from the fire.

Sweep, The Story of a Girl and her Monster, was the most amazing book ever! It has some sad parts, but it wasn’t heartbreaking. Our Book Club found it to be very interesting – especially because the storyline has an amazing connection to history. Our book club couldn’t believe chimney sweeps were KIDS that were sent up chimneys to clean them! We loved so many of the characters, but some really stood out. Charlie was great because he is a sweet monster who takes care of Nan. The Sweep was wonderful for taking Nan under his wing, and always made Nan happy no matter what situation. Toby was also a favourite!

On average, our club agreed that we would recommend this book to all friends. Most of us agreed that we LOVED this book and would put it on our ALL TIME FAVOURITE book list. It received 4 out of 4 stars!

This book is a story of a girl named Nan Sparrow who is chimney sweep and yes people used to see children up chimneys to sweep them! Nan had a “sweep” who always made her happy even in the saddest of times and years after he disappeared Nan can now feel like a sweep. Definitely going on my most favorite book list five out of five 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
