Smiley: A Journey of Love

Written by Joanne George.
Published in 2017 by Fitzhenry and Whiteside.

On a cold wintry day in February 2004, a small Golden Retriever was rescued from a puppy mill by Joanne George, a veterinary technician from Stouffville, Ontario. He was born without eyes and a condition called dwarfism. Joanne named him Smiley because he always looked like he was smiling, even though the scars on his face showed that he had suffered in his short life. In time, Smiley would become an international social media star through Instagram and Facebook, and his many adoring fans have come to include Cesar Millan and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

I absolutely loved this book, it has such a good message behind it and I just love all the things this dog has gone through and had to go through in his life. I can’t imagine being him and having to learn everything not being able to see. overall I recommend this book to everyone it will warm your heart.

Smiley is a dog with dwarfism, a condition that makes his head and face more deformed and his mouth always looks like it is smiling. His eye sockets are also empty. I think this book is a really good book. He is having to go through so much and he is still so happy and optimistic. He really made everyone happy and helped people recover, like Teddy, in the book. He brings smiles wherever he goes. Smiley was put to sleep after his 3 month battle with cancer in early October 2017. He had tumors on his liver and stomach.😢😭

He was always happy, even though he had so much going on. Smiley was still excited and lived in the moment of his joy. I think it was really amazing that he could still do things normal dogs can do despite the fact that he was blind. I don’t know how he could understand, what was happening to him, but regardless, he was still happy, and Smiley. I really recommend this book because it is a true story and will really touch your heart. It will show you that everything is possible.

This book was very heartwarming. I especially liked it because I too have a golden retriever. Anyone who loves animals would enjoy this.

Smiley the blind therapy dog was a dog with dwarfism, a condition that gives dogs a larger than normal head, a deformed jaw with a shorter nose, crooked teeth, and short legs that might be bowed or even twisted. I really like this book. I think it shows disabilities don’t limit your abilities. It helps us understand to that you need to love yourself no matter how you look or even if you can’t see yourself like Smiley. This book is also very easy to understand. It was clear, and if you’re interested in dogs, this is a great book for you. But sadly, vets found tumours in Smiley’s liver and stomach which caused cancer. He said goodbye to us in mid October 2017.

I recommend this book because again, it’s easy to understand and I love dogs so maybe you do too! It is very inspirational for people who do or do not have disabilities, everyone can read this. I just don’t recommend this if you get sad really easily because Smiley is an amazing dog but said goodbye to us at the age of 15. This is a really good book and you can learn about dogs and the author.

Go read this book and spread love about him NOW!!! 🙂

Seeing anything go through pain like what Smiley faced would be horrible. But this good almost brought tears to my eyes. Talking about a dog that went through so much, but is still an excellent animal.

This book has a lot of emotion. There is a dog with no eyes but then he finds a home. It is a happy and sad story all in one. I love it. i think all animal lovers would really like this book.

Smiley is a book about a blind therapy dog, Smiley. He is a golden retriever who suffered from a genetic disease called “dwarfism”. His owner Joanne George and his two “siblings”, respect and understand him. Smiley helps a lot of people, from helping children read to 5 minute hugs. He spreads happiness among everyone who sees him. Later he died of cancer with tumors in his liver and stomach.

I think this is a great book, and many people agree with me because this book has great reviews. I also think this shows that your disabilities don’t limit your abilities, it just changes them. You can figure this out because, look, Smiley was blind, but he wasn’t restricted, he used it differently. This story is true, but through the eyes of someone who loves him. You can tell it is true because the owner made this book, and she describes how she loves him. He also was so happy at all miserable times, and you can tell he was happy because he sprained his tail from wagging it too much. It was very sad when he died because of tumors in his liver and stomach, which resulted in cancer.

I recommend this book because it makes you very happy in the beginning. There is one reason I would not recommend this. When you figure out he died, you get very sad. I also recommend this book if you think problems/disabilities restrict you. You can also learn the danger puppy mills give, so make a difference and get a puppy!! This might just save it’s life. This is also a good non-fiction book, and you can learn about dogs and the author.

I love smiley so much because he was born in a puppy mill and born with dwarfism and blind but though he had a lot of disability he didn’t let those stop him from being a service dog smiley is a golden retriever lab

This is probably the most heart warming book I have read all year. It is about a dog named Smiley that has dwarfism and his mouth looks like he is always smiling.
I really recommend it if you like animals.

The book, Smiley, is about a Golden Retriever named Smiley. This book teaches us a lot of inspiring messages. Smiley was rescued from a puppy mill. It was written by Joanne George. Smiley trained as a St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog that visited hospitals, senior homes, and schools to give hope and comfort for the people and kids who were suffering or lonely. Smiley then became an international social media star on Instagram and Facebook because he was very unique.

  11. S.C. Hillhurst School

Smiley is a dog with dwarfism which means that he will have a larger head, a deformed jaw, crooked teeth, and short legs that make it harder to walk with ease. Difference is a theme shown throughout Smiley, like when he was first adopted by Joanne. He is slow to trust people, but later on, he becomes the nicest dog that Joanne ever had. I would recommend this to grades, 3-7 because of all of the deep topics this book covers because if younger ages were to read this they might not understand the meaning of a “therapy dog” or why tissue might need to be removed from an eye socket without an eye.
